Have you ever looked around while shopping and noticed that more and more items these days contain artificial sweeteners? If you have, you're not alone.

Upon shopping at my local Marks & Spencer grocery store and purchasing what I felt would be a highly nutritious (and delicious) set of natural yogurts filled with exotic fruits, I discovered that I had made the unfortunate mistake of falling victim to misleading labeling. On the package, in very small letters, the yogurt read: "contains sugar and other sweeteners." Other sweeteners. I've gotten very used to seeing this lately. I try to make it a general rule to normally read all labels and check the list of ingredients on items that I purchase. Today, however, I slipped, and as a result had to toss out the yogurts that I had bought.

Up until today, I had considered myself something of an expert when it came to sussing out what was wholesome and what was not. I could spot fruit juices a mile away that have other sweeteners in them as they are usually labeled with a shiny red and bold NEW! and followed by the highly suspicious wording, "Natural," or "Healthy Choice," on them, which usually guarantees quite the opposite in most cases. These things I tend to shy away from as I don't feel that artificial sweeteners are at all natural or healthy.

The companies responsible for making these artificial sweeteners all have a long and distinctively dubious track record. Take aspartame, for instance. Aspartame is the sweetener that is sold under the product names of Equal and NutraSweet and has been on the market since 1981. It is a chemical that can result in the accumulation of formaldehyde in the brain, and has had more complaints than any other food additive available to the public. It has been linked to MS, lupus disease, fibromyalgia and numerous other central nervous system disorders. Some researchers have even linked aspartame with depression, manic episodes and male infertility.

I hate it when that happens to me- I made a mistake buying cereal once. I saw the Fruit Loops with 25% less sugar and thought "brilliant! They cut down on the sugar, it won't be as sweet.". It wasn't until after I actually tasted the "diet soda" flavor that I realized they hadn't just cut down the sugar, they'd added artificial sweeteners. I've been very careful to read labels before buying anything that I'm not familiar with ever since.

This research is often skewed so companies can take their doctored statistics to the government for the approval process. Sad fact, but true in most cases.

Hi Krista. You're certainly welcome to go to the library and research this information. I've done so in the past, but am not getting paid enough to cite everything I've ever read on this subject in a scholarly fashion as this is not an academic or scientific journal. The information is out there, however, and I encourage everyone to research this subject for themselves and you will get the same information, albeit more detailed. It is also always wise when reading scientific journals to find articles that have been a)peer-reviewed by independent scientists i.e. scientists that are neutral on the subject and have not been paid for their review by a corporation that has a vested interest in the outcome and b) most important of all, only trust research that is conducted INDEPENDENTLY and by scientists who are not working for McNeil Nutritionals in this case. Most scientists are not independent as they need to earn a living and are paid handsomely for their research. This research is often

Interesting point of view, however I was disappointed in the cited sources. The articles contained no links to actual data or articles from scientific journals. I hesitate to take information, even from a "doctor", when there is nothing to back it up but their word.

Thank you for your insights into what Splenda really is. I do drink artificial sweeteners in occassioanl diet soda, but I think I'll start making my daily hot tea with good old sugar. Thanks again.

I will never understand why people make poison for other people to eat...

Interesting article! We use Splenda in moderation, but perhaps we should just go entirely sugar free!

I've been avoiding this since I did the research for my article on artificial sweeteners. Thanks for this more in depth look at it!

Good to know. You should also be careful of sweeteners that contain saccharin, which is a carcinogen. Thanks for sharing :-)

Great article Kristine, & an important health topic. EVERY artificial sweetener is poison. There is nothing wrong with sugar in moderation. Nutrition myths - which I wrote briefly about in my eggs & cholesterol article - are everywhere & widely accepted as fact. Artificial sweeteners are believed to be the healthy alternative, but that's absolutely false.

Good article! I agree everyone should stay away from this sweetener, it is just as bad/addictive as sugar!

Good article :) I'm all obsessive about what's actually in stuff too :P
