It's all subjective. On a certain day we're favored towards a blueberry bagel instead of oatmeal, or PBS instead of the history channel. I can say that my mind is constantly changing. I can't say I've ever had second thoughts on voting for Elliot Yamin on American Idol.

American Idol has changed throughout the five seasons its been on the air. The first round of auditions had no clue they'd be part of the biggest television sensation to ever hit the airways. They were simply kids from small towns with big dreams. Kelly Clarkson's fame was based as much on her grounded background as her talent. As the seasons have progressed, professional singers have entered the competition.

This season, most of the singers had extensive training and there's been no true "claim to fame" element. Lisa Tucker was on Star Search when she was 13. Both Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry were in bands prior to the show. Kellie Pickler sang in huge competitions in North Carolina. Paris Bennett comes from a family of famous singers. Katharine McPhee's mom is a music teacher and she attended the Boston Conservatory. There's nothing wrong with musical training, but it steers away from the fun of American Idol.

Elliot, in addition having the best voice in the competition, didn't have the same level of training as the other contestants. He didn't come from a rich family, didn't go to an expensive conservatory and didn't get here from nepotism. He grew up deaf in one ear, struggling with diabetes, and singing from his heart. He got here based on talent - Kelly Clarkson style. If this show is to remain true to it's roots, that should take him far.

So as subjective as we are when making decisions, you can't ignore the facts. Elliot has earned this. I hope that his hard work will pay off, and he wins this competition.

Training/non-training issue aside, Elliot is true constistent, entertaining talent. He's sung everything extremely well or at least well in a few cases. However, the fact that he doesn't have any professional training or other real-life experience says quite a lot. He da' man!

I agree that it's not bad to have a record deal, but Debbie isn't saying that. She's saying that new stardom & new opportunity is a huge appeal to the show. Contestants like Elliot have worked harder and will have to continue to work harder.

Being in bands and performing live doesnt equal training. If anything, the other contestants should be respected for getting all the experience they could prior to the show; Simon himself has recommended that to anyone who's considering going out for the show. Not to mention, Kelly Clarkson had a record deal, worked with producers and did tons of shows before AI, including a professional stint at Six Flags. So the line between pro and non pro are really blurred.
