Being that I am someone who minored in film in college, and have spent much of my life studying the movie industry, I have found that I have become a bit of an expert on the subject of movies. I have also found that there are common errors that are made in movies that directors often miss. I have compiled a listing of the most common movie errors.

Boom Mike

If a character is sitting down in a room, pay attention to the top of the screen. Chances are very good that you will either see a shadow that is moving at the top of the screen, or that you will see a black fuzzy thing on the screen for a moment. This would be the boom mike. It would also constitute the most common error possible in a movie.

I once heard a film professor point out that you can see either the shadow of a boom mike, or the boom mike itself in about 40 percent of movies. While I have never tried to follow up on this number myself, I do take it for an educated guess from a professional.

Ice

If a character in a movie is talking while drinking a beverage with ice in it, pay attention to the ice to notice a movie error. You will notice in most cases that the ice either never melts, or melts at an uneven rate.

One of my favorite movie errors of all time involves ice water. It is from the movie, The Departed, and has not been reported on many movie error sites.

When Captain Queenan brings Costigan into his house so that they can talk about Frank Costello being an FBI informant, Queenan offers Costigan a glass of, "ice water." If you notice, there is not any ice in the glass. You will also notice that there is never any condensation on the glass, which would be caused from the cold temperature of the water.

Clocks

While directors have gotten better with this type of movie error, there are still many that do not pay attention to clocks that are on the walls in shots. It is common that the clock will either change drastically during the scene, or that it will be different from the time that it is supposed to be in the movie. A prime example of this type of movie error comes in The Hospital (1971) starring George C. Scott.

I never catch these kinds of things. Now I'll know what to look for! Great entertainment, L :)

Another goof: People driving a car that is in "Park." I'm sorry, the only movie I can think of is "The Truth about Cats & Dogs" when Brian & Noelle are racing along city streets to get to the radio station. They roar around a corner & the camera zooms in on Brian, who is sitting in a car with the gear lever in its upright & locked position. I've seen it many times, esp in TV dramas.

One of the places to catch a lot of the cigarette goofs is any episode of Columbo. Columbo's cigar changes lengths, has ash, doesn't has ash, is lit, is unlit, is in the hand propped against the car, is in the hand gesturing in the air - that cigar never stays in one spot or at one length in any shot-to-shot transition.

Very interesting! I am going to need to pay more attention - you have my interest sparked.

Of course, there is the classic when Steve McQueen's car loses SIX hubcaps during the chase scene in "Bullitt" as well as having different hubcaps missing at different times.

What a fun article! One of my favorite goofs is in the movie Tombstone... closer to the end one of the characters fires a two-bullet shot gun three times. Good job on the write!

Thank you for sharing! Now, I will be looking for movie goofs.

For those of you that care - my favorite movie error comes from the original Night of the Living Dead. Ben tells Barbara that the place is all sealed up tight. They then walk by a window that is not boarded up like the rest of them. L.

In the very girly movie "Now and Then" one of the characters puts her cigarette out... twice. That is one of my favourite movie goofs...

In the original "Superman" movie serial of the World War II era, in one shot you can see the shadow of the boom mike, as well as the entire offscreen crew, on the side of the car the actors are standing next to. Also, in the M*A*S*H TV series, there was a writing goof when one of the actors stated that he was tired of seeing "The Blob" at the camp theater. "The Blob" came out a few years after the Korean War ended.

Fun article! Having been on the other end of the camera, we try hard to not make mistakes like these. Sometimes, the mistake is kept because the actor had the best performance during that take. Sometimes, especially with mics dangling in, it's a film lab thing. Sometimes continuity photos are lost, and sometimes we're just in such a darn hurry, we don't have time to check on all these things.

I always found it extremely vexing that the main characters in a TV series like "Lost" experiences or see something completely out of this world - yet don't tell any of the minor charters anything about it. I found out that this is done on purpose because net to get SAG pay if an extra actually speaks.

I love seeing movie goofs!

In It's Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart goes to answer the phone with a wreath around his arm. Next shot of him on the phone there is no wreath, and in the next one the wreath is back! Good article.

Very amusing! My favorite error comes from "First Knight." In one shot, the bad knight is holding nothing but a sword handle; a split second later, his sword is fully restored!
