Every year, people worry about the flu, and with good reason. It can lead to respiratory problems, pneumonia, and any number of other more potent afflictions. There are some basic steps and ideas that you can implement to drastically lower your chances of catching the flu. Many of these steps are common sense, but it never hurts to remind yourself and stay on top of things. Here are some basic steps to help you stay flu free.

Decide whether to get a flu shot--This is an easy decision if you are in a high risk group. If you are in the health care field, or if you have a weakened immune system for any reason, then by all means, do so. If you are a senior citizen, then it is generally accepted that you should as well.

Get a checkup from your primary care doctor---It is always a good idea to have regular checkups, and to talk with your doctor about ways to improve your health. Your doctor can also advise you of whether or not you need the flu shot. Do not underestimate the importance of this step, as your doctor knows your body well, and may be able to head off future health headaches.

Start a vitamin regimen---Any mainline multivitamin will do the trick, and stick to the dosages and schedule. This will keep your body "stocked" and ready for the flu season.

Drink orange juice everyday---A glass of orange juice everyday keeps the doctor away is a great rule of thumb. The effects on your health are astounding, and it tastes great! What more could you want?

Stay clean--Washing your hands during this time of year, is an absolute must. You can do more to prevent the flu with this step than all the others combined. Keeping your home clean is very important as well. In a home with kids, you should clean and disinfect often. Anyone who has had young children in school or daycare can attest to that. Be careful to was the kid's hands when you wash your own.

Use common sense when sending your kids out to play---If your child is running out the door without being properly dressed, then you are setting yourself and them up to be sick. Be sure to take the time to wrap up, even if it is just to go to the mailbox. It only takes a moment to catch a serious bug.

Takeaways
  • Flu shots should be taken for all high risk people.
  • Common sense will keep you healthy
  • Start a multivitamin regimen
