Frozen pizzas have greatly evolved since they were first introduced to the American public in the 1950's. From simple cheese pizza to spinach and mushroom delicacies, you can find a wide variety of frozen pies ready to bake and satisfy your unique craving. Considering the cost of making pizza from scratch, and considering the price of restaurant pizza, frozen versions are a fantastic value. It's easy to pop one into the oven, and several minutes later a complete meal is ready to serve and enjoy. There are literally dozens of brands and varieties to chose from, but the top brands are the ones that stand out in my mind. My two favorites are Tombstone and Red Baron, but although they are good, in my opinion, neither brand is the ultimate frozen pizza. I have my own ideas on the perfect pie, and I'd like to hear from other frozen pizza lovers and learn their opinions on which one is best.
Tombstone
Tombstone brand is loaded with tasty toppings generously sprinkled over a thick, rich sauce. I've never had a Tombstone frozen pizza I didn't like, but in my opinion, the crust could be better. The crust isn't flaky at all. It's considerably heavier than other brands, and I think it could be improved upon. The heavy crust greatly increases the weight, and comparing weight to price against other varieties can be somewhat deceiving.
Red Baron
Red Baron is my personal favorite. The crust is flaky and light, and the toppings are ample. The sauce is also quite tasty, and Red Baron offers a wide variety of toppings to choose from. I stock up on Red Baron frozen pizza when I find them on sale, and I feel they are a great value, especially when considering the cost of take-out varieties.
Tombstone Versus Red Baron
Tombstone and Red Baron both offer very good products, but each has its own unique attributes. In my opinion, the perfect frozen pizza would have Tombstone toppings on Red Baron crust. Although it will never happen, I'd like to see Tombstone and Red Baron merge to develop a completely new frozen pizza that tops all of the rest.
