Two students, one a 15-year-old at Connetquot High School on Long Island, New York, and the other a 17-year-old from Sachem High School North on Long Island, were arrested for allegedly formulating plans to attack and kill students at Connetquot High School, as well as fellow employees at the McDonald's in nearby Bohemia, where they both worked. The detailed plans recovered by police officers and revealed in local newspapers frightened the normally peaceful communities and severely worried students at Connetquot High School, as the plans were eerily similar to the attack at Columbine High School in Colorado, carried out by the perpetrators Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris.

According to an article in Newsday, a New York/Long Island newspaper, the 15-year-old, whose name has not been released, told police in a statement that he "had angry thoughts about killing people at Connetquot High School because I don't feel they've done right by me." The student further expressed his anger a having continually been made fun of and picked on simply because he lived in a trailer park. He also told police of his distaste for some of the employees at the McDonald's where he worked, and of how he shared his plan and desire for carnage with Michael McDonough, the 17-year-old student and resident of Holbrook, Long Island, also arrested by police as a co-conspirator.

Michael McDonough also gave police a statement, which included disturbing details as to how he and his friend planned to build pipe bombs and purchase guns, in order to conduct mass killings at Connetquot High School, the McDonald's, and then turn the weapons on themselves.

Takeaways
  • Michael McDonough and his friend planned to build pipe bombs and purchase guns
  • A journal belonging to the 15-year-old contained written accounts stating plans for attack
  • The journal stated the attack would take place on the 9th anniversary of the Columbine attack

This article would make me want to homeschool if my children were younger. We already have cops in our high schools and I live in a semi-rural area no less.

Very scary. Thank God their plan was found out before another tragedy took place. Excellent reporting on this.

Good reporting on a growing subject - how to control these copy cats in our schools. People ask me why I don't go back into teaching high school - this story is part of the reason why I don't. I'm glad everyone in this school and community avoided tragedy by sharing information. Thanks, Scott.

That is so disturbing, Scott! I'm so glad that their plan was stopped before it was set into motion. Thanks so much for getting the word out about this. You've done a great job! Take care, MZ
