Being overweight takes a toll on your self esteem. I have taken the first step in losing weight by admitting that I have a problem and exercising and eating right. Losing weight is never easy, and can even be scary when you join a gym or health club. Exercising in font of a group of skinny people can be very embarrassing.

The people who really need to be in the gym are not the ones you see there. There should be overweight people huffing and puffing while shedding some pounds. Instead, there are skinny people hardly even breaking a sweat working out. This is very intimidating and often causes many obese individuals to head for the gym's nearest exit. As an overweight woman, I can say that having my fat jiggle in front of thin lean health club members will not motivate me to stick with it.

So what goes on in these gym members' minds when they see an overweight person waddle into their turf? You may be surprised. Many of these dedicated and fitness savvy gym frequenters respect someone who is trying to improve their health. Whether you are skinny or overweight, you are both at the gym to reach the same goal. You both want to get healthy!

Many fit and lean gym members started out just like you. They weren't happy with their bodies so they did something about it! Many won't even pay attention to you because they are concentrating on their own workouts. I'll be fit one day, and I won't ever disrespect anyone with a weight problem who is trying to do something about it. I will understand where they are coming from because I had to take that first step, too!

There will always be people judging you for something. It may be your weight, your looks, or your clothes. It is no different in the gym. Sure, a lot of the gym members won't point or stare at you while you struggle to work out, but don't you have to deal with these same types of people anywhere you go? Skinny people are at the grocery store, the mall, even at the library. Many are judgmental. You can't hide yourself from them so why avoid them at the gym? You are less likely to be judged by people who respect people like you who are trying to get fit at the gym.
