I used to suffer from eczema. Nothing outrageous - no obscene bumps or scratches that cause me to hide under wraps in a birka, but when I moved from the tropics to the Pacific Northwest, I noticed a difference in my skin's texture. Resistant to the over the counter treatments, I opted instead to do nothing at all. But eventually, I caved.

At first, I self diagnosed on the web. But the product recommendations sounded like strange and futuristic chemicals I couldn't trust. When I saw my doctor, they prescribed Cortisone cream. Thing with this stuff, however, is it gradually decreases the elasticity of your face -not something anybody looks forward to, especially at 25.

My aunt who recently moved to Portland suggested I try using something with a lactic acid base. Now, know something about her, she is 60 plus and has the most amazing, smooth, and flawless skin. So I took her word for it.

They sure don't make it easy to find lactic acids over the counter in supermarkets, but eventually, I got lucky. On the dusty bottom shelf of a Walgreen's store, I spotted a poorly designed label with the product name Lac-Hydrin 5. It's an alpha-hydroxy cream laden with lactic acid.

I bought it. But it took me a while to muster up the courage to use it. Living with sensitive skin means learning how to be quite wary of every little thing that comes within a cat's whisper of my fragile face.

But eventually, I unsealed it with great trepidation and put it on - just a dab. The next day, I rejoiced at the fact that my skin had not singed off from my little experiment. And within weeks, I noticed a huge change in my complexion. My skin became smoother, softer, and no eczema was in sight.
