Through the mid 1980's the evolution of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) has been that anything originating as an auditory stimulus was called, "Auditory processing." Today the main heading is auditory processing with the sub categories of central auditory processing and language processing. There is still so much to be learned about how the brain processes information that it is a confusing and not a well understood area of study. Many just refer to the main heading of auditory processing disorder (APD) or refer only to language processing.

Takeaways
  • The difference between Central auditory processing disorders and language disorders.
Did You Know?
Central auditory pathways begin at eighth cranial nerve and end within the cortex. Language processing is mainly for structures in the cortex that are above the brainstem, beginning post Heschl's gyrus.

This is a very interesting overview of a wonderfully complex subject. As the mother of a special needs child I find research like this very encouraging. It is important to note that we all have unique ways that our brains work - none of which are 'wrong' or 'broken'. It is my sincere hope that research like this will eventually lead us to a complete restructuring of our educational system to more effectively reach all children in the most effective and encouraging way.
