Ultimate frisbee is a game that has been gaining popularity in recent years. It is a very popular game on the local beaches, so it's only fitting that Wildwood, NJ is hosting a tournament. What might surprise many people is this is Wildwood's 15th Annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. It is true that the popularity of the sport has grown in recent years. Yet, it has had a bit of a cult following since the early 1990's. During the time when beach volleyball was at it's peak popularity another beach sport was just beginning. Now as the popularity of professional volleyball is declining, will ultimate frisbee be the new sport to replace it? Only time will tell, but you can judge for yourself on July 28th and July 29th on the beach in Wildwood, NJ between Oak and Poplar Avenues. The tournament will take place from 10 am until 5 pm on Saturday the 28th, and from 10 am until 4 pm on Sunday the 29th. The tournament is co-ed and will be divided into two divisions. One division will feature teams with three male players and one female player. The other division will feature teams with two male players and two female players. The games will last for 50 minutes each. Registration for teams is closed at this time, but anyone can come by over the weekend of the 28th to watch the tournament for free on the beach. There will even be a trophy for the winners of each division.
For anyone that has not seen ultimate frisbee before it is a sport that borrows aspects from several other sports. The object of the game is to score points by passing the fisbee into your scoring endzone without having the frisbee intercepted by the opposing team or an incomplete pass which will also give the frisbee to the other team. The one other way the team loses the frisbee is if they hold the frisbee for more than 10 seconds without passing it. You might thing this sounds like a cross between basketball and football. That is true with one little twist. Neither team can run with the frisbee, you must pass the frisbee to advance it on the playing field. The field is smaller than a football field as it is 100 meters long with the two endzones being 18 meters long each. The field has a width of 37 meters.
