Avoid Being a Houseplant Killer

I love plants! Plants make the home look more beautiful and relaxing. Whenever I walk into a plant nursery I see a houseplant I like and I buy it. Unfortunately for the houseplant it is doomed to live with me. The longest houseplant I have ever had was a month before it died. A friend of mine labeled me the houseplant killer because I wasn't able to keep any houseplant alive for very long. I have talked with other houseplant killers and I knew it was a sad event for the many houseplants and their owners. I thought there must be something that I and other houseplant killers can do so killing of houseplants stops happening. I brainstormed some wonderful ideas that have helped me to stop being a houseplant killer and may help others too.

Pick a plant that is very easy to take care of. In the past I would select these beautiful looking plants that needed a lot of care and attention. I would have to make sure the plant was getting enough sunlight, food, water and love. I wasn't able to keep this up every single day. So I searched for houseplants that are easy to take care. Some easy houseplants to grow are Ponytail Palm, Baby's Tears, Cast Iron Plant, Devil's Ivy and Rubber Tree Plant. My favorite one is the Cast Iron Plant. With the Cast Iron Plant needs very little light and water.

Follow the instructions on how to take care of the plant. Many times I would buy a houseplant and guess on how to take care of it. The amount of sunlight didn't matter to me. I figured anywhere would be fine. I would give the plant water every so often thinking it will survive. Sometimes I would drown the houseplant in water then deprived for weeks without water. Today I follow the instructions that come with the houseplant. If I don't understand the instructions I ask a plant specialist from the store I bought it from for help.
