If you have read my article "Vacation", you will know that my family acts as the poster family for Traveler's Aid. It has occurred to me that as soon as our car passes into the city limits of our destination people shudder, chills run up their spines and a sense of foreboding overcomes them. Yes, we have arrived.

Our most recent vacation to Colorado Springs, CO started out beautifully. The weather was lovely, the children were behaving and we wee having a wonderful time when my SUV suddenly started refusing to make tight turns. It growled and generally acted like it was extremely unhappy to be asked to do such a despicable thing as make a sharp turn.

A check of the power steering fluid revealed that it was a bit low, so I spent Sunday night scouring the Internet for a GMC dealer in Colorado Springs. Fortunately, I found Ferguson GMC.

After getting slightly lost on the way, I arrived at the dealership around 7:20 a.m. Assistant Service Manager Don King immediately greeted me. He understood the fact that I was on vacation and 700 miles from home with no other transportation. Within an hour, he had someone check the car and had an explanation of the problem and an estimate for repairs.

There was a shortage of rental cars in the city and we were not going to be able to get one until later that afternoon. He ensured my car was safe to drive and arranged for a rental car to be available to us when we returned with our vehicle.

We went on to do some sightseeing and were called when the rental car was available. We returned to Ferguson GMC and left our SUV for the repairs to be done.

I was very impressed with the honesty of this service department. I had a bad right strut and I was told that I could still drive back home with it if I wanted to. Most service people would have told you that it needed to be fixed right then to ensure that they made the $600 for themselves. My vehicle was also out of alignment and again, it was something that could have waited and I was told that upfront.

In the interest of safety I decided I wanted to have my car fixed before leaving town to ensure that we would not encounter any problems on the highway while driving home.
