As obesity continues to be at the forefront of many healthcare initiatives, so the focus also turns to the ways in which to avoid the development of adult onset, type 2 diabetes. For many adults, diet and exercise is a key focus to managing the risks of type 2 diabetes but, all too often, these lifestyle practices may fall to the wayside.

For some patients, the use of a prescription drug known as Orlistat, has made great strides in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by placing some control over weight management in the at-risk patient. But, Orlistat, in recent research, has also been shown to effectively manage the free floating fatty acids of the plasma as well as the management of insulin sensitivity, leading to even greater health benefits in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes, even without weight loss.

While Orlistat is generally considered a medication used to reduce obesity and promote weight loss, by inhibiting the activity of lipase in the intestines, it has shown promise to also improve the outcome and development of type 2 diabetes in obese, and non-obese, patients. These findings suggest that regular and consistent use of Orlistat, for six months, will provide the most effective treatment option when working to achieve this goal.

In terms of dietary restrictions, the use of Orlistat does not impose a change in diet. However, for patients to obtain optimal results from use, and continue to offset the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a healthy diet is considered prudent. In fact, even a minor change in diet can improve your health when using Orlistat. That is to say, a total and complete healthy diet may not always be necessary.

With or without the achievement of a healthy weight, it is believed that those who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes can avoid this health complication when using Orlistat effectively and consistently. With control over the development of a fatty liver, Orlistat may soon become an effective therapeutic medication in treating other liver complications.
