A diamond in the ruff. That's how former mayor of Brownsville describes the town. She said, "We're on the cusp of making good things happen." However, many good things are taking place this summer in the town.

The biggest event happening this summer is Music and Reading on the Mon. John and Calra Detisch, along with Ryan, founded this program four years ago. According to John Detisch, the goal of Music and Reading is to provide entertainment for people in the surrounding area and to promote reading. He said," We hope to show that Brownsville has places people can enjoy themselves."

This event can be enjoyed on select Sundays on the grounds of the Nemacolin Castle by people of all ages. John Detisch said, "We try to get a good mix of music that would meet everyone's taste. It's a good time to bring a picnic basket and have a good time with the family."

On June Sunday June 24th there was such an event held with about 25-30 people in attendance. The band Two Many Tubas from Finleyville entertained the adult crowd, while a story and a craft entertained the younger audience. The entertainment for the children was provided by Maria Fetok on behalf of the Brownsville Rotary Club. She said, "Music and Reading on the Mon is something I wish more people would take advantage of."

Husband and wife couple Lily and Mike Petronka from Bentleyville were among those in attendance at the event. They said this was their second year participating and they actually learned of the event last year from a friend who was in a band called Best of Times, who played at the concert last year. Lily said, "I think it's a great way to spend a Sunday evening." Her husband agreed and said, It's a great time to sit down in the open air with the castle behind us and the flowers...it's nosthalgic."

Look for a little bit of your own nostalgia on July 22 from 6-8 PM, August 19 from 6-8 PM, and September 8 from 1-8 PM. On the 19th you can look forward to hearing the Vibrations, and on the 8th you will be listening to the Uniontown High School Ensemble, the Skylights, and another yet unknown band.
