America the beautiful, we spends millions each year helping foreign countries with aid. Yet, we neglect our own people in the process. I was so disappointed to see the vicitms of Hurricane Katrina and the way they were treated and neglected, shuffled around like they did not matter. In my opinion it was because the majority of those vicitims were poor. The poor have to create their own opportunities to advance there lives. They have to be willing and motivated and have an honest desire to want to improve their situation. This is why the poor remain poor.

They don't know how to create their own advantages or they don't have the hope that thing can be better. They just stay in their own desperate situation not trying to change. Sometimes a situation seems so desperate there seems to be no help. People can become lost to addictions. They need alcohol ,drugs, gambling, or cigarettes to make it through the day. They don't want to deal with the reality of their situation, so they stay high and numb. And then, their lives and problems become worse because of the addictions. Then they end up in jail and then it cost the taxpayers money to house them and take care of them. It's a vicious cycle of events that happens over and over again.

People become lost in the system, because they are poor. They don't know how or have the desire to make a change. They feel like all their hope is gone and there's no chance for them to change and make a better life for themselves. Every one needs to have hope and faith in order to survive. You have to believe there is going to be a better day. The social system we have to help these people is not an answer. The more children you have the more benifits you recieve. So now we have people how just have children and live off the welfare system. Taking money from the poor and disabled. The ones who really need help. I suffer from a mental illness, which I can control with medication. I am not elligable for any government aid.

There is a typo. It's their family, not there family

Good article, especially how you captured the "vicious cycle" process of one thing leading to another and a feeling of hopelessness. The best way to help is to offer people opportunities to help themselves, rather than just giving a handout. That's why a group like Habitat for Humanity is so cool. They let people earn homes for themselves by helping build, and the people can get an affordable mortgage. If there is an opportunity, there will be hope.

We grew up poor, on welfare stamps for part of my teen and preteen years. I feel for those in the inner cities. It must be hard to escape some of those places but it can be done. www.arizonahomeownerinsurance.biz/arizona_auto_insurance.php We always need to be mindful of how we can help those who are poor.

Not all poor people have lost hope. Some, like myself, struggle and struggle to make ends meet. I was unemployed for 2 months. The last job I had for five years. I couldn't get unemployment, I couldn't get my medicines, or food. I am still poor and I still struggle every week. But I haven't given up hope, I've just given up on the government.

Anybody can befall unfortunate circumstances & become poor. You can lose your job & when it's not easy for you to find another job, you can get poor quickly. The problems are 1) Manufacturing jobs being outsourced. 2) Large numbers of Mexicans coming into the country getting most of the jobs in agriculture. 3) Employers seem to be getting 'pickier' than they used to be with regards to hiring people due to there being too many unemployed people per job opening. 4) If Bush cared as much about conditions here as he cares about Israel & the Middle East, maybe there would be something done to alleviate the problem of anybody being unable to get employed within a few days of starting the search for employment. Slap an import tax on cheap foreign imports to help unemployed Americans instead of just letting people suffer such poverty.

How can you create a article judging the poor when you probly never experienced things that they go through. Just today a woman came into my sister job, KFC, starving and begging for food. According to my sister, she said, "Please, give me anything...anything you have". To my surprise this was a white woman that looked as if she wasnt on drugs or had any type of addictions. Its amusing how when rich people think of poor, they think its because of drug addiction or a black person.

The poverty rate in America is lower than most countries in the world. Buildings get old, and if not kept up, crummble. Owners of buildings can not always keep them up. Urban renewal in most places is good. Violent crimes exist all over the world. Americans per capita are law abiding citizens. Inflation is not as bad as you think and only goes up if wage rate goes up. Sexual depravity is a personal matter. All types of evil is all over the world. America still is a good place to live.

Being poor in America is a lot better than being poor anywhere else.

Yet the city did nothing about rent control or affordable housing. This means the people have to find housing out of town which means, if they have vehicles, more gas. Gas costs have doubled food costs. Things might not be so bad if there were not such large numbers of immigrants that entered the country without following the law. Providing all that extra water is one of the reasons it is in short supply. There are also less jobs available for born and legal immigrants.

Local headlines the other day was that poverty is lessening across the USA but has risen in our town (Long Beach California). There were many power outages several years back, electric rates tripled and landlords raised rents. So. Cal. is also running out of clean water so pipes it from a neigboring state, which increses costs. The city is redeveloping building luxury hotels, restaurants and expensive condos. The service people are low wage earners and those places can not exist without them.

I am not exactly sure where this article is going? Are you implying the governemtnt should do more or that the people must do more? I suppose I am for a little bit of both, but there is no one reason the poor remain poor. I am also in favor of goverment assistance when needed, not just wanted!
