Hiking the Swiss Alps is the perfect way to observe nature and admire the picturesque landscape of meadows, valleys, mountain ranges, and lakes of the Alps region. Hiking in Switzerland can be done on about 31,000 miles of trails that explore a variety of landscapes. The most beautiful places in the Alps can often only be reached on foot. These hiking tips may come in handy for anyone, but particularly those that have never hiked mountain regions before.

Preparing for the hike
  • Start your vacation with short hikes so your body can adapt to the height and thin air of the mountains. Taking a day or two for simple hikes will build up your stamina for longer hikes later.
  • Many people experience altitude sickness, so if you suffer from a headache, loss of concentration, or feel sick above 6500 feet, start your descent because it is the only remedy to these symptoms.
  • Watch the weather forecasts.. Don't choose a high altitude hike on overcast days because it will destroy all the good views. Avoid deserted areas when the weather is bad. Be sure you or your guide is experienced in hiking in snow so you can avoid avalanches and other dangers.
  • Avoid dangerous trails. Unless you are accompanied by a mountain guide, avoid exposed trails passing deep ravines, crossing glaciers, or any route you do not feel is safe or you are unprepared for.
  • Start early because you often do not know how long it will take to complete a hike. Depending on your fitness level, the number of breaks, and other circumstances, the hike may take longer than indicated.
  • Consider how you will travel to the mountain and your next stop. If you are using public transportation, be sure you know the time table and when the last ride is available. The more you know about the transportation, the better deals you can find and the more prepared you will be for unexpected delays.
  • Many hikes are available only during the summer. This may be a great time to plan the vacation because there is less snow and more areas to explore.
