Early this morning, a car rammed into a power pole on Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, Hawaii. This occurred several blocks from Kaimuki District Park. It is unknown whether the driver was hurt, although there are eyewitness reports of anyone being picked up by an ambulance. Waialae Avenue is the main avenue that cuts through Kaimuki.

Kaimuki, named after a type of traditional Hawaiian underground oven, is a historic town that once belonged to King Kalakaua, who used the land to raise ostriches. After the ostrich businesses phased out, it became a carnation farm to provide funerals with flowers. Now, it is a relatively dense residential area and business district and connects with the outskirts of Kahala, Hawaii.

The accident occurred at around 6:45 a.m., around when I - and the rest of Oahu, Hawaii - were getting ready for work. The car accident knocked out all power in Kaimuki. According to Hawaiian Electric, about 1200 homes lost power because of the accident.

Regions affected are as follows:

Kahala

Kaimuki

Palolo

St. Louis Heights

Hawaiian Electric Co., the utility organization that provides electrical power to all of the state of Hawaii, was seen working on the power pole and other lines in Kaimuki in an effort to restore the lost electricity. According to residents, most of the houses are receiving power now, although a few blocks are still in the dark.
Power was apparently restored shortly after 7 a.m. this morning; Hawaiian Electric Co. was still seen working to get electricity to the few houses that were still experiencing a shortage of power.
