Spyro: A Hero's Tail is regarded by Spyro the Dragon fans as the best Spyro the Dragon game for the PS2 and one of the best Spyro games of all time. The little purple dragon has stirred the hearts of many a fan for six games total and has become one of the most popular video game series ever. Here is a guide that will tell you everything you need to know about Spyro: A Hero's Tail.

The Story:

A long time ago in the Dragon Kingdom, there was a Dragon Elder named Red. Red was a good Dragon Elder, until he began lusting for power. This lust for power turned him evil. Because of this, the other Dragon Elders banished Red from the Dragon Kingdom. In time, the memory of Red had all but disappeared from the memory of Dragon-kind. Only the Elders who banished him, and the Professor, still remembered him.

The Dragon Kingdom has been peaceful for several years now-ever since Spyro defeated Ripto there. Then Red showed up. While in exile, Red made plans to get his revenge on the Dragon Kingdom by taking it over and twisting it to suit him. He also met Gnasty Gnorc, who had also been banished from the Dragon Kingdom, but by Spyro. Red and Gnasty joined forces and began to mine the Dark Gems. Dark Gems are found deep underground and have the power to change a bright, pretty world into a dark, disgusting one.

Spyro has to go through all of the worlds of the Dragon Kingdom, destroy the Dark Gems, battle the minions of Red, and defeat Red himself.

All About the Gems:

This is the first Spyro game where you actually do something with those gems that you collect. Gems are needed for you to purchase power-ups and different things you will need to complete the worlds. A red gem is worth one gem, a green worth 5 gems, a purple worth 25 gems, and a yellow gem is worth 100 gems. You have the ability to get as many gems as you want, there is no finite number of them that comes from fallen enemies. There is a finite number that comes from containers, though, as they do not regenerate. Here is a list of the gem containers and the different ways to break them.

Wicker basket: anything will break these.

Metal chests: have to be charged or horn-dived.

I played and loved the first Spyro... but now I'm pretty much just into PC games... and man are they hard to find for the Mac.
