Why is it called Clearwater beach, Florida? I assume it is because I can see my toes, when I am walking out into deeper water.

Clearwater beach is on the west coast of Florida. It is north of St. Petersburg and west of Tampa Bay. You now have to drive on the new bridge that takes you onto the beautiful causeway lined with palm trees, and during the Christmas period, has the prettiest of decorations.

About halfway along the causeway is a turn to the right and here you will see lots of boats at the marina. Continuing on you will eventually come to the 'roundabout'. Being English I have no problems with this, whatsoever but it can be a headache for some of the tourists. There are many exits, and I have to smile when I see the same vehicle going round and round.

I take the second exit, which is Mandalay, off to the right and to the northern end of the beach. I pass a large hotel, which always seems to be changing names. Shops and restaurants line this part of Clearwater. Then the parking meters start. I continue about another 4 or 5 blocks and park where it is free. The last time I parked on meters it cost me over $5. In this area you will see so many new condos being built.

There are side streets leading to the beach all the way down this road. Here the beach is less crowded and there is plenty of gorgeous sand to walk or just sit and relax.

Close by is a restaurant and shop, with rest rooms, which is located on the beach. If you do not wish to purchase anything, then public rest rooms are just behind it. They are not as clean so I would rather use the restaurant ones.

Okay, so you want more life? Then at the roundabout go left and you will find many more hotels this side of the beach. Some have tiki bars and live entertainment. There is also pier 60. There is nothing really to do on it during the day but check out entertainment as perk times.

On the south side of the pier is the tourist area. Here you will find the usual jet skis and parasailing.

I have stayed at the Ramada in Clearwater and also a couple of the smaller motels. Look out for coupon books for great deals.

Wow! Missed it on my last trip to Fla. I went further south to Venice instead... had a few golf game goin' and we never got around to exploring the beaches much. Must try Clearwater next time. Thanks for the tips, matie! :o)

This place sounds wonderful. I can see what you mean about roundabouts. A lot of Americans do seem to be confused with how to use them. I think it's funny how we have to go around them on the right, but it makes sense really as they drive on the right over here. Sophie
