The Shins are an indie rock band hailing from Portland, Oregon. The band - named after the family in the musical The Music Man - combines country with alternative rock and folk. The Shins are made up of James Russell Mercer (singer, songwriter, guitarist), Martin Crandall (keyboardist, guitarist, bassist), Dave Hernandez (guitarist, bassist), Jesse Sandoval (drummer) and Eric Johnson.
Originally started ten years ago in 1997 in New Mexico, they have gained a lot of popularity in the past few years with the release of several full-length albums.
The Shins' first album was Oh, Inverted World (released in 2001). The music from this CD was featured in the popular film Garden State. The Shins' second album was Chutes Too Narrow (released in 2003). The Shins' third album was Wincing the Night Away (released at the beginning of this year). Like other indie artists who have gained a lot of popularity in recent days (such as Omaha, Nebraska folk artist Bright Eyes and his Cassadaga CD), The Shins' last album has done very well on the charts. It was number two on the Billboard 200, even though the album was illegally leaked onto the Internet several months prior to its official release; if anything, the leak helped promote them even more.
Besides their concert at Pipeline Café in Honolulu, Hawaii, The Shins have played several notable concerts, including one at the Hollywood Bowl in California.
