There is a new type of video game that is making waves in the video game industry. After the huge success of Guitar Hero, a game in which you have a guitar and have to play it correctly to gain points in your game, there is a new game coming out later this year called Rock Band.

Rock Band is very much like Guitar Hero except that you have four players that make up your Rock Band. One player is the lead guitarist, one player is the bass guitarist, another player is the drummer, and the final player is the singer. The Players must play their instruments correctly in order go gain points and eventually become a famous rock band.

Guitar Hero is one of the most popular games today and there is no doubt that Rock Band will follow in its footsteps and also be very popular. This video gamer doesn't understand the fascination though.

Video games are like movies and television and books. They are all a lot of fun because they take you into a world that you can't experience on your own. The video gamer is put in somebody else's shoes and you find out what it's like to be them.

Metal Gear Solid is an awesome game because I don't have the ability to become a super stealthy spy that can kill one hundred men without being killed. Metroid is a fun game because I don't encounter aliens that I get to blow up on my way to the grocery store. Sonic the Hedgehog is cool because I'm not a hedgehog and I don't have the ability to roll up into a ball and spin real fast.

But Guitar Hero? That is possible to do. You don't need a video game to step into the shoes of a guitar player or to be in a rock band.

Here's an idea. You want to be a "guitar hero"? Why not go and learn to play a real guitar? You want to be a part of a famous rock band with your three friends? Why not go and start a real band and really learn how to play the instruments?

Maybe you don't want to be a famous guitarist and maybe you don't want to be in a famous rock band. Maybe you just want to have fun playing the guitar. Well, you can do that with a real guitar too. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are just games for people who are too lazy for the dedication of actually learning how to play a real instrument.

Takeaways
  • If you want to play the guitar then get a real guitar.
  • Video games should put us in the shoes of someone we can't be.
  • Guitar Hero is for people too lazy to learn to play an instrument.

You overlooked one point, some people play GH because the interface makes it a fun game and you get to listen to fun music as part of the game too. The basics idea behind any game is that you hit certain controls in a certain order and then you win. Sure GH may follow this idea a bit literally (you follow on screen instructions for a higher score) and sure you can just put on itunes and play any game but that doesn't make GH pointless. In my personal opinion GH is about as fun as Tetris (a game I despise) but that doesn't mean it isn't fun for someone else. After all many types of games can be described in the same way as in this article (Flight Simulators, FPS, "The Sims") but it's the personal bias of the player that draws them or repels them from the games.

Maybe because it takes intense training and expensive equipment to mimic the type of guitar playing found in Guitar Hero. Maybe because there are millions of fans and very few rock stars. Personally, I think people like Guitar Hero so much just to piss you off.

Brian, good point about the air guitar guys. I guess I should've called them out too. Although to be fair air guitars are much cheaper than guitars and video games and controllers so maybe those are just the really, really poor people that want to play guitar.

Guy, you obviously didn't read the whole article. Those types of games I said I understand playing because you it isn't plausible to do them in real life. You can get a guitar and play it. You might say you don't have the time or the dedication but most people say that and then end up playing it for hours everyday, which if you had a real guitar, you could actually learn how to play.

Scwha?? I LOVE Guitar Hero. I don't have the patience or the time to learn to play real guitar, and I have no aspirations of becoming a rock star. I love the game because it's fun, and it has some rocking tunes, and it's more fun than playing air guitar to your old 80's CDs. I love ya, Lee, but I have to disagree with you on this one. :-)

Very interesting article, even though I do not totally agree. Good job!

I'm sorry, but I just cannot play Freebird on a regular Guitar. Nor, would I devote the time to learning the song on a real guitar, mind boggling I know!

Um, probably because instead of learning how to play a full fledged instrument they can just play a game. Amazing! Oh but here's an idea, instead of playing first-person shooters let's just join the marines. Heck, I mean why not conduct illegal street races instead of playing Need For Speed, and crash into a bus while you're at it, screw Burnout! Your article, while receiving a response from me, was also very enlightening.

Amen Lee!

I enjoyed this piece. What I want to know is how you balance your stance of this video game with your positive story on the air guitar championships. I think air guitarists could learn to play a real guitar, too, if they weren't so lazy.

Guitar Hero was one of the games at the recent graduation party I sang at. It was very popular and someone was on it all night.
