My husband drives a black Mustang GT, I drive a red Ford F-150, and we have always assumed that my husband's car would be the one most likely to be stolen. This afternoon, my husband was telling me about an article he read in the newspaper stating that Ford F-150's are the number one most stolen vehicle in the United States. Surprised? I was. I mean, I like my truck and all, but really if it were me stealing a car I could think of a few more that I would rather steal before stealing an F-150.Curiosity got the best of me, and I wanted to see this article for myself. I went to the Courier Jounal's, our local newspaper, website, and tried to find the article for myself with no luck. So that's when I decided to Google "most stolen cars".
I quickly found out there are several groups who create lists of the "most stolen cars" and which car is number depends largely on just exactly which list you are looking at.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) in 2005 the most stolen vehicles were:
1. 1991 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1989 Toyota Camry
4. 1994 Dodge Caravan
5. 1994 Nissan Sentra
6. 1997 Ford F150 Series
7. 1990 Acura Integra
8. 1986 Toyota Pickup
9. 1993 Saturn SL
10. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2005, the same year as the list above, the vehicles that had the highest theft claims were:
1. Cadillac Escalade (the Cadillac Escalade has been number one on this list for four straight years)
2. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
3. Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab
4. Ford F250/350 Supercrew
5. Chrysler Sebring
To complicate things even more looking at further information provides even more confusing results. According to CCC Information Services in 2005, the same year as both lists above and a list that does not bode well for Acura Integra owners, the most stolen vehicles were:
1. 2001 BMW M
2. 1998 Acura Integra
3. 2004 Mercury Marauder
4. 1999 Acura Integra
5. 1995 Acura Integra
6. 2002 Audi S4
7. 1996 Acura Integra
8. 1997 Acura Integra
9. 2001 Acura Integra
10. 2000 Jaguar XJR 11. 1994 Acura Integra 12. 2005 Suzuki Aerio
