The first immigrants ventured to the American colonies with the desire to worship freely. Religious wars and disputes within Germany and France, as well as, the English Civil War prompted Pilgrims, Puritans, nonconformists, and some Catholics to migrate to a new land. The religions of these new people were primarily Christian and were not guided by the desire to be tolerant of all religions, but the Constitutional Convention believed that a federally sanctioned church would tear apart, rather than bind, a newly formed union together. The prominent Baptist minister from New England, Isaac Backus, commented on the idea of government being run separately from church saying when, "church and state are separate, the effects are happy, and they do not at all interfere with each other: but where they have been confounded together, no tongue nor pen can fully describe the mischiefs that have ensued." The phrase "separation of church and state" is traced all the way back to 1802 when Thomas Jefferson famously wrote to the Danbury Baptists and referred to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution as the foundation for having a "wall of separation" between church and state. In the year 2007, can the United States continue to delicately balance religious freedoms alongside a "wall of separation" between church and state when a wealthy, avidly Catholic man is seeking to establish an entire town centered on religious beliefs?

Sorry, usual long winded self. I would have to look it up to be sure, but I doubt there was a 12 month calendar in Jesus' time and I do know the birthdate was chosen to co-incide with the Winter Soltice, a "pagan" celebration of worship to the Sun god (or is it a goddess?), so that most Christians are actually celebrating pagan holidays and yet, wish to persecute pagans. I should shut up. Christians might do well to look at a world map in comparision to Biblical History. The Islamic religion is sort of like the Hebrew religion in neither recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, but Islam does recognize him as a prophet, whereas Hebrews are still waiting upon the Messiah.

Or a good reason to enforce "separation of church and state". When people are taught from childhood falsehoods about their own religion (Christianity) they are bound to wreck all kinds of havoc with other people's lives with their other beliefs. I always understood that the early English settlers and those who wrote the Constitution did so to ensure no one would be forced to worship as the Queen decreed. How could they have ever imagined a world of aeroplanes, autos, atomic bombs, computers and the Internet to name a few! Religion does need to be kept separate from government. With unthinking fanatics, common sense goes out the door.

Jesus specifically stated (and remember this is all translations of ancient Arabic or Greek texts) not to call anyman "Father" on earth and yet Priests are called father. The Bible warns against idols and yet the Pope is to be idolized with kissing of his ring and bowing at his feet. The Catholic religion also teaches that all babies are born with "Original Sin" even though Jesus paid the redemption for Adam & Eve's transgression, so that all might have eternal life.

Great informative article. I have no problems with Catholics building their own city and running it according to their beliefs. I wonder if they will have a wall around it and gates, because most cities have people travel through them enroute to other places. And what happens when the kids grow up and want to leave town? Some Catholics are great people, but the religion itself, does not adhere to Christianity, even though it was supposed to following in direct line with Jesus' apostles.

How come you didn't pick the Islamic Sharia ruled city in New York? I guess Christianity is less socially acceptable than Sharia Law.

To be honest, this scares me. I wouldn't be comfortable living in ANY town that is ruled by a religion.
