David Beckham, how doth fame love thee? Let us count the ways:

1. Internationally renowned soccer star, now No. 23 for the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team.
2. Married to a Spice Girl (Posh Spice, also known as Victoria Beckham, who also happens to be a successful solo pop star).
3. European fashion icon.

He's all these things, and more. With a single glance, David Beckham can drive the media into a frenzy, as they did when he showed up at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) a few weeks ago. He makes and breaks fashion trends as easily as he can wear a tight, tailored Giorgio Armani suit one day and rhinestone-encrusted workout pants the next. The girls fall for him the way his hair fell when he shaved it off into a Mohawk after sporting tabloid-headlining dreadlocks. David Bekham started the "metrosexual" trend, and for all the world knows, it doesn't get any more metro than that.

As cutting-edge-fashionable as David Beckham may be, he's up against something he's never had to face before: In Europe, his trendiness was taken in stride by those flashy European men and their Prada jackets. When David shaved off half of his eyebrows, so did the rest of male Europe. When David grew a blond faux hawk, so did the rest of male Europe. (Hell, even some of female Europe)

In America, it's a whole different ballgame; and we're not talking about that whole "football" versus "soccer" terminology argument.

No, something much more. American men, as a whole, don't lug their designer suits around in Louis Vuitton manbags while sporting bleached faux hawks and Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses. No way, José. Instead, the audience at Beckham's next soccer game will be middle-class American men in white t-shirts and cheap Gap jeans, with the only "bling" being a spot or two of ketchup and mustard from those dastardly-delicious, albeit gut-expanding, stadium hot dogs. The idea of wearing $200 Capital E jeans like Beckham, each pair hand-stitched by 30 of Levi's finest denim tailors, would make these dirty Americans vomit all over their wieners.

Soccer in the USA is not even popular as it is around the rest of the world. Even ice hockey is more popular than soccer as a professional sport. So I doubt Straight guys would want to copy David or even see him as a fashion role model. Maybe 15-40 yr old bi and gay guys. I did hear that they are shopping around about maybe releasing a pair of fragrances....one each for Becks and Posh. But we already have OLD SPICE and OLD ENGLISH..... not a joke for real!!

Mr. Beckham is cute and definitely more appealing to me than his wife. I just don't get why everyone is so facinated with these people though, they aren't any different than anyone else except they have lots of bucks. Good subject.

I certainly give the very attractive David Beckham props for his creative and unique way of dress. I do think that it is about time that American men stop connecting stylishness with sexual preference. However, if American men started copying David Beckham's personal style, wouldn't Beckham's style no longer be considered unique and would instead just be trendy? Wouldn't those fitted t-shirts and sharp blazers become the oversized jeans and Sean John shirts we despise so very much? Either way, it comes through in your article that you are hoping that men are inspired by David Beckham's fashion creativity, and learn from it without just copying it. Great job.

wear what compliments you bod, and if it happens to be a fashion trend at the same time - then bravo. Otherwise, trends or no trends, people can still look hot, cute, or simple with clothes from the "past", like last year.

People should stop changing their clothes based on "fashion" just because someone ELSE says it's in or out. What possible reason does my husband have to care what Beckham is wearing? I sure don't.

Um...Ok, many american men be they gay, straight, bisexual can't afford what David Beckham can. He makes millions a year as oppose to the rest of the world. He's in a very fortunate place financially, a very small exclusive place, less the 10 percent of people anywhere make that kind of money. The majority of the world has more important things to worry about than keeping up with celebrities at least if they're adults. Yes I'd love for my man to dress nicer sometimes, but he has to wear it and pay for it not me. If you think that all straight men are sloppy and cheap then aren't you doing the same you're accusing them of because they don't buy pricey clothes or "stylish" clothes because they feel it isn't manly enough?

Nice article. You're right, American men are quite sensitive about not being thought of as homosexual. It doesn't just stop at clothing. They have difficulty being close or physical with other men, often slapping or hitting each other in lieu of real affection. Great work.

Ummm...yeah, interesting view. One thing you didn't bring up though is that most mature American men aren't like American women (and obviously European men) in the fact that adult, mature American men don't feel the need to imitate celebrities they see on TV like a lot of women (and apparently European men) do. Rarely will an adult, mature, stable American man buy something because it is a trendy thing to do. He will buy it for two reasons and two reasons only. #1...He likes it because it makes him smile. #2...He likes it because it makes his woman smile. There is a third reason called logic and necessity that will make men buy certain things (like a minivan) but that is a whole other topic. Thanks for sharing.

These two are certainly a fashion statement! The new photo shoot in "W" Magazine with he and wife Victoria is really hot!

Bravo! Yes, maybe Mr. Beckham will rub off on American men. That would be one small step towards improvement. Are we at all surprised that some men over here are reluctant to accept him as an A-list celebrity? This article is very humorous. Why am I the only one to have commented on it?
