You always hear that you should never "burn your bridges" when you leave a job even if it is an unpleasant experience. However, I began to realize this may apply to companies and their former employees when it comes to reputation in the industry with present or former clients. I once was in an interview and a particular company I had worked for previously marked some cynicism from the interviewer.

I was informed that being a member of the team of the former employer that I was probably arrogant, lazy and unable to assimilate in any other corporate environment. I immediately felt awkward and tried to continue the interview without a negative reaction to the comment.

I responded by saying, "it very was unfortunate that was the impression but I would be hardworking and dedicated in getting the job done". I also reiterated this by saying I would like to further discuss my qualifications, the potential opportunity and how I could best fit into the organization.

The interview slowly began to regain momentum until another interviewer joined in on the discussion. The first interviewer again scolded my former employer and said because of this that I could be a potential risk. I continued to keep my composure and I knew when it was all said and done I was not getting a job offer. I shook hands with each interviewer and was told thank you for my time. I was also told I would receive further information if I was to be considered for employment.

I still sent the usual thank you notes after the interview because it is proper etiquette. I was completely insulted throughout the interview but I never let my emotions get the best of me. Two weeks later, I received the rejection letter which didn't surprise me at all.

Overall, the best way to respond to insults in an interview is to kill them with kindness if nothing else it is not something expected.

Nice little article. I'll be job hunting soon. Hopefully I won't have to deal with such close-minded people.

Great tips. You kind of have to look at the interviewers--they already knew you worked at the other company from your resume. If they had no intentions on hiring you, why did they waste your time? You were better off anyway. Who'd want to work for a co like that ?

Sometimes the only thing you can control is your own attitude and you kept a good one.

Wow, I wouldn't have wanted to work for their company if that is how they handle their own business. You probably dodged a bullet there!

i'm pretty sure i'd end up telling them off. i don't think i'd have that sort of self restraint. you're pretty good if you kept your calm!

Ouch! You should be polite but don't you just want to let the air out of their tires?

Maybe you, but not me. Something that direct I would have addressed as direct. Just me, though.
