According to a press release, just after a vote on Tuesday by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to take on a series of new anti-gun laws, a sponsor of the gun ordinances told the news media that the laws would most likely not stop violent crime from occurring in the city. This statement has the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) calling the passage of the new gun laws as pointless, a waste of time, and having no immediate importance to the city.SAF founder Alan Gottlieb said, "Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, in a remarkable fit of candor, admitted to the news media that these new gun ordinances won't stop violent crime...yet the Board of Supervisors has voted to tighten its chokehold on the self-defense rights of law-abiding citizens and the one retail gun dealer in the city. This is ludicrous. You don't stop criminals by punishing their victims."
Gottlieb also said, "We sued the city more than 18 months ago over its ridiculous November 2005 gun ban initiative...and by passing these ordinances, which are only slightly less restrictive than a ban, it appears the city now admits they will ultimately lose that lawsuit in court."
The new anti-gun laws would forbid the possession or sale of guns or any firearms on San Francisco city property. It would also require gun owners to lock their guns. This would also require gun dealers to have to sell trigger locks.
Alan Gottlieb also explained to the news media that these new laws were completely separate from violent crime. It's just part of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors being gun-hating extremists. He believes that these laws mean nothing to criminals.
San Francisco resident Steve Derick said, "guns are a huge problem in San Francisco, just like they are in any other city. But the government thinks that guns need to be stopped on all levels. I agree that weapons take lives, but you can't restrict gun use on people who use them to protect themselves. You have to start with criminals and gang-bangers. All you're doing now is restricting honest citizens from protecting themselves and their families while criminals are still out there, untouched by these so called anti-gun laws."
