-While sitting in a salon waiting on my wife to finish getting her hair fixed, I overheard an exchange between the cashier and a customer. The customer wanted to get a tan, and the cashier informed her that they no longer provided that service. In an attempt to be helpful, the cashier told thewoman about a place down the road called "Bronzed Bunz" (Yes, this is a free plug: Bronzed Bunz is located on Louisville Street across the road from Walgreens in Starkville, MS,if you're in town, drop by). The woman replied, "I saw that place, but it looked a litle too ghetto." I know racial code words when I hear them and this was a clear message that this woman did not want to go to a tanning salon that was black oriented. Now let's think about this for a moment. I don't want to say that it never happens, but I cannot recall a time that I have ever seen African Americans go into a tanning bed. And I certainly cannot understand going to a tanning bed in the middle of summer when you live in the Deep South. I kind of reminded me of a story once told by a black comedian whose name I can't remember. He said he was walking down the street in Nebraska, and a white woman in a top-down convertable saw him, reached over, and locked her door. Just goes to show you: racism makes you stupid.

Respectfully, I must disagree. if she perceived the area to be poor, then she was getting her hair fixed at a "ghetto" place because we were two buildings down from the tanning bed. Either way, this girl was a chowder head and hopefully has learned a thing or two at the university she was in town to attend. Maybe there was a "How to not make yourself look stupid and bigoted by keeping such observations to yourself 101" class she took.

Ghetto doesn't pertain to black people. It actually started with the Jews. Here's the dictionary.com definition: a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships. Like you said, black people don't really have a need to tan, so the woman probably meant ghetto to mean that she perceived the area to be a poorer or higher crime area. Of course, it's still a discriminatory comment...
