Literacy is the key to the world. This may sound silly but not being able to read means, you won't be able to get a well paying job, it will limit your educational experiences, trying new things could be nearly impossible, people could easily take advantage of you, you would not know what is harmful or dangerous and the list is endless. Reading to your child is really important. It is important to start reading to your little one while he/she is in uterus because this allows the child to hear their parents' voices. When they are born keep reading! Pick books that have black, red, and white pictures because those are the colors they see first. Then as they become a little older, around 2-3 months board books with colorful pictures are wonderful. If you are not the type to sit down and read board books then read what ever you have out loud. The more children are exposed to language the better their skills will be.
When children start to talk is when reading can become more interactive. Pick out books with big lettering and simple words. Encourage the child to mimic what you say and the sounds you make. Pointing to what you are reading is a great way to give them a visual with the sounds. Help them make connections between letters and sounds!
When picking out any book, make sure you read it all the way through. There are some books that aren't really appropriate! Try to get books that reflect their culture and heritage because this is a great confidence builder. When children can relate to a story they will feel more connected. Some books will have pages that have things on them or little pieces that move around. Make sure that the book is not a choking hazard and that nothing small can break off. Beware of glitter in books; rub your finger over the glittered area. You want to make sure that the glitter won't come off and get into the child's eyes and/or mouth.
