Long Island has deep history and its history is celebrated in the many museums on Long Island. Here is a look at some of the best museums Long Island has to offer.

1) Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum located on Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor. Learn about the history of whaling on Long Island. This is a great place for families as it has a lot of hands on activities for the kids including a scavenger hunt. You will also learn about whale biology and conservation. This museum is located in the quant town of Cold Spring Harbor which offers plenty of shops and restaurants; it is great place to spend the day.

2) Long Island Children's Museum located at 11 Davis Center in Garden City. All the exhibits in this museum are hands on, so you know the kids will love it. This museum is a great learning experience for kids.

3) Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages located on Route 25A in Stony Brook. There are actually three museums and you may need more than one day to see them all. The History Museum celebrates the history of Long Island as it relates to American Culture. The Art Museum contains more than 4000 paintings and sculptures dating as far back as the early 1800's. The Carriage Museum contains a collection of more than 200 hundred horse drawn carriages.

4) Nassau County Museum of Art located at One Museum Drive in Roslyn Harbor. This museum houses a large collection of paintings and sculptures, many on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There is also a beautiful garden which you can walk through as well as sculpture garden. Your admission also includes entrance into the Tee Ridder Miniature Museum

5) Cradle of Aviation Museum located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Garden City. This museum will teach you the huge roles that Long Island has played in history of flight, from the first balloons to Charles Lindbergh's historic flight to man first landing on the moon.
