Titanic, the Chicago Fire, the San Francisco Earthquake, the Johnstown Flood, Katrina. These are just a few of the many disasters that have occurred in or near North America. Films have been made about them, books have been written about them. They have been endlessly discussed in print and on PBS. However no matter how much destruction they caused or how many people lost their lives over them they may have not been the worst of their kind.

I now give you another list: The Sultana, the Empress of Ireland, Peshtigo, the Eastland, American Airlines Flight 191. Have you heard about these disasters? I bet not. Each one had more loss of life and more destruction than the more famous disasters I first listed. Here in this article I plan to acquaint you or refresh your mind about each one of these events and in the process maybe give you a new perspective on human suffering.
