A cat can be a great asset to a family. Some common mistakes new cat owners can make are: expecting the cat to be comfortable right away, the cost of a healthy cat, and the natural independence and personality of a cat. When picking a cat for your household make sure the cat likes you. This sounds strange but helps immensely when choosing. If your choice is among 5 or 6 cats it is better to sit down and let a cat come to you. This will tell you automatically that the cat is taken with you and make adjustment much easier for you and the cat. Have you ever had a cat that just doesn't fit or you don't have that special bonding feeling with? Not taking the time when first choosing a cat is the culprit. Spending time playing or petting a cat before taking him home can tell you a great deal about a cat.
Some cats just naturally rule the roost. Others are more timid and need a couple days to adjust to their new home. Keeping as calm an environment as possible is best for the kitty. If children are in the house, find out if the cat you are choosing is accustomed to children, or give the cat a quiet place to reside while adjusting.
The cost of a cat can add up. Make sure to have money aside for veterinary visits so vaccines can be done and your cat's overall health can be addressed. Talk to your veterinarian about possible spaying or neutering of your cat. Declawing is a controversial subject amongst cat owners so be sure to research the pro's and con's before going about taking your cats claws away. Some people remove just the front claws to allow the cat to still have some defense against any threats. The cost of food and cat litter will be a monthly cost added to the budget also. If you are like most cat owners, toys will be a part of that cost also.
Cats each have their own individual personality. Fiercely independent, they also love cuddling and attention. The time to let him be, and the time to cuddle will become known to you by your cat. They are much lower maintenance than dogs as far as emotional or physical needs but have needs that must be taken care of.
