Last time I visited Chicago, it was 1989. Working 90 hour weeks on hundred million dollar litigation involving a sizable chain corporation, I had scant time to see Chicago. Nevertheless, I somehow managed to enhance my naively favorable impression of this City I had up to that time never visited and so was happy to return there for a day trip during our recent excursion to Milwaukee.

My favorable predisposition toward the city of Chicago is attributable to stories my grandmother told me about the year she spent there in about 1920. But the impetus for my own family's Chicago visit was the tantalizing American Girl Place, the subject of a related story soon to be published on Associated Content. American Girl has four store/restaurant/theatre/salon complexes nationwide and my 8 and 9 year old daughters had been begging me to haul them up to New York, 4 hours from home, to experience one. Then, we were invited to a wedding in Milwaukee, and decided instead to include the Chicago American Girl Place in our plans. A special girls-only excursion into the big city.

Our Metra train from Wisconsin arrived in Chicago at the Oglivie Transportation Center, not the most convenient location for sure. By parental fiat, "we" decided to walk to American Girl rather than find another train, however, so we could see more of the city. The architectural variety is amazing. From gilded, ornate turn of that other century skyscrapers created at the behest of wealthy industrialists to shiny, reflective-tiled behemoths, the contrasts peacefully coexist. I could easily have entertained myself for a day just walking around looking at buildings. But there is much more to Chicago than interesting buildings. There is the Magnificent Mile.

The most amazing monument in Millennium Park is Cloud Gate, a reflective representation of a drop of mercury.

I agree "the bean" is truly gorgeous. The Plensa Fountain is intriguing as well. I just hope they will tear down the hideously ugly Pritzker Pavilion. I think it looks like one of those puffy foil popcorn things you heat on a stove!

Was in Chicago last month but pretty much tied up with a conference. I did see the "Cultivating Knowledge" statue, though.

I just moved back to the Chicago area after living in Amish country for 13 long years. I can't wait to go back to the city. This is five-star info!

Carol. You would love Chicago in December. There is a charming. German Christmas Market with vendors from Nurnberg. One of my early articles here is about it. Come on over. Give me a shout and we can enjoy a glogg wine together. I should be walking by then and can harldy wait to do some of the things I enjoy so much.

Glad to hear you enjoyed my town so much! 1) Luv picture #2, LUC ROCKS!! 2) You should bring your girls back to AG Place in the winter. Water Tower place is all lit up, and the cafe overlooks the Tower...all so magical. Plus then you guys can go ice skating in Millenium Park! If you think the skyine reflected in the bean is cool now wait until Chicago is frosted in white and twinkling.

This is a great article! I was born and raised in Chicago and am STILL impressed with the many attractions that are there. I live in Georgia now, but I return to Chicago several times a year to visit. I always recommend that people who are new to the city check out the Magnificent Mile and Navy Pier as well as the Shedd Aquarium (esp. if you have kids) and the museums. I never thought about recommending Millennium Park, but I have been there and it is quite amazing. If you do not enjoy cold weather though, it's best to visit during the summer months...

btw, I've been through Chicago while driving, but have never actually stopped there, besides just rest stops or gas stations. You made it sound really fun. :-)
