Most often, this phrase is used by a well-meaning friend or family member when they become concerned that you are over-worked, or are not taking time to enjoy the pleasures of life. This phrase can also be used just as a gentle reminder to take a few minutes for yourself each day.
In researching this phrase, I was unable to find its exact origin, however it is believed to have originated in the United States. Some believe that it dates back around 100 years; however, there is no documentation supporting that belief. One particular reference suggested that it originated with a album released in the early 1980's by Ringo Starr. The album was titled 'Stop and Smell the Roses," however it is my contention that the phrase was in use long before Starr recorded his album. One reference suggests that 'stop and smell the roses' was used in conversation between friends, one of whom had a beautiful rose garden. The friend worked so diligently in the rose garden that she did not take the time to enjoy her work. Her friend gently reminded her to stop working and experience the beauty she had created.
In a Google search for the origin of the phrase, I received no viable results. A few websites with questions about the origin of the phrase, 'stop and smell the roses' were returned in my search results, however no definitive answer was given. Even a visit to Wikipedia did not result in the wealth of knowledge for which I was looking. Wikipedia too, made mention of the album recorded by Ringo Starr.
