As I was getting ready to attend the Josh Groban concert Wednesday, July 25th in Uniondale, New York, I prepared myself to enjoy a vocal performance pleasing to the ear. I did not anticipate the typical ostentatious sound, high energy or over-the-top show many pop acts have. I was more realistic. This wasn't necessarily going to be a "fun" concert; it was to be sweet, but on the slightly boring side. After all, I had seen Andrea Bocelli before, whose voice is also that of an angel's, and it was exactly what I expected...a night of culture and beautiful soaring notes. When the crowd rose to their feet, it wasn't to dance, it was for an ovation. So as I settled into my seat, I had resigned myself to a quiet and enjoyable evening. The moment Groban arrived on stage however, I knew my preconceived notions were dead wrong.

The 7:30 pm opening act at Nassau Coliseum was Angelique Kidjo, a Benin born singer, performing Afro-pop songs heavy on the percussion. The first couple of tunes was quiet nice, but soon wore out their welcome as they all seemed to sound the same to those unfamiliar with her music. Amongst her set-list was a rendition of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter." To give credit, her band carried on splendidly and Kidjo kept the energy positive and light. After their half hour set and a 15 minute intermission, the lights went dark, the splashed yellow-orange curtain rose, and Groban's voice sounded in the roaring stillness. He began with an ode to his fans, singing "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" off of his latest album, Awake. And so began the Josh Groban experience.

In had seen Josh alot of years ago when he preformed with Cilen Dion and at that time thinking if this young man ever comes to Winnipeg I,m going to see him. I heard he was coming so I asked by husband if he wanted to on a date, Aug 12 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, to the Awake concert. I didn't know any of the songs except You Raise Me UP. But we had the most amazing time. Josh did not disapoint. I totally blowen away. The day after I went and perchased all the CD's I could find with his name on them. Thats all I've been listening to ever since. I am proud to be a member of the FOJG.

I went to the Adelaide concert in Australia. It was just wonderful. Obviously almost all the things mentioned by the others happened in the concert. But I (along with a small group of people)was blessed enough to have been able to catch him while he was leaving the building. He was very nice and he gave his autograph to everyone of us. I was able to talk to him. He even heard me sing a line from his album Awake! God bless him for making this world a better place with his beautiful music...

Thanks Marty & Joivana! Marty, you bring up a good point about being able to share his music with your daughter. There are a several artists that are universal and are able to bridge the generation gap, and gladly Josh Groban is one of them. (Side note: not going to a concert since the 70's!?! Think of what you've missed out on!) Joivana, I'm happy that you got to see Groban multiple times. Thanks for leaving a remark!

I went to Josh's concert in Norfolk, VA. with my daughter. I was not particularly excited about it but had agreed to go because I had a couple of his CDs. I had not been to a live concert since seeing Peter, Paul and Mary in Charlottesville back in the early 70s!!! Well, I want you to know, I was totally blown away by this young man! What a truly gifted voice! I got totally into it and now pretty much only listen to his cds and have joined FOJG! Am going down to Charlotte to see this concert again and I can't wait!! It is also nice to have some music my daughter and I can share! God bless you, Josh Groban!

Julie - No kidding! Grobanites are a great group of people, as I have come to find out through the circulation of this article! Count me in! Prapim - You get to see Groban again? Lucky! I know you'll have a great time! Melissa - glad you had fun at the concert. Not used to Afro-pop music, but loved her and her band's energy! Thanks for the comments! It is very much appreciated!

This review was right on. I saw Josh in Nampa, ID last night, Aug 21st. The thing I loved about it was that he sounds just like he does on his CD's. As for A. Kidjo, it did start to sound a little the same, but she had some great songs to make up for it! This concert was well worth the money.

Thanks Maria Grella for your wonderful review. Josh concert at GM Place on Aug.17 was truly amazing. He became a fabulous super pop star with classical baritone angelic voice. He was full of life, good energy with sense of humour. Josh blew me away. Lucia Micarelli's violin performance was awesome, full of emotion and energy esp solo Kashmir. And the opening act, Angelique Kidjo's 30 mns performence Afro-pop-song was so enjoyable with sense of humour. She duet with Josh and taught Josh how to dance on stage...We had so much fun with Josh and look forward to see Josh again in Vancouver.

Thanks Lisa & Kate! I love his soothing baritone; it really hits the spot! Lucia Micarelli's violin action was awe-inspiring. Loved the concert, glad you liked the review and I look forward to seeing him again in the future. Thanks again!

Your review was dead on. This was one of the best staged and performed concerts that I've seen in years. Thanks so much for mentioning his violinist. I didn't catch her name at the concert and want to buy her new CD. She too was fabulous.
