Can Sex Cause Blindness?

Don't Blame the "Love Bug"

Movies and TV dramatize and sometimes poke fun at people who at the time of having sex collapse from a heart attack or stroke. They have led a few people to believe that sex can lead to temporary or permanent blindness if its performed to mind blowing heights of ecstasy.

It is true that there have been cases where people who already had a pre-existing heart disease or pre-cursors before a stroke experienced a full blown attack during sex. They may have noticed signs of a problem in the beginning stages of an attack, which
could have lasted several days and chose to ignore them. They may not have known something was wrong, but might have felt a little "Under the Weather." Although heart attacks and strokes are life threatening and deadly culprits of silent deadly disease, can you really go blind from sex?

Evidence is building that you can. The answer lies in blood pressure. If you are already prone to high blood pressure, but don't take any medication to control it, don't watch what you eat to help it stay low and don't monitor it then temporary or permanent blindness can occur. It's rare, but not impossible.

Blood pressure can elevate with excitement, workouts, heat, movement, salt, and a host of other things. When blood has trouble traveling through tiny capillaries and arteries pressure mounts up behind the tiny pool of blood trying to squeeze past. If the driving force behind the tiny pool of blood, increasing blood, build up enough pressure it will burst weak capillaries and arteries. The small blood vessels in the eye, capillaries, will rupture. This can cause blindness. Occasionally when capillaries rupture they will form a blood clot in the eye that looks horrible, but will dissolve on its own allowing the eye to return back to normal in vision and appearance. You may experience blurred vision, a blind spot, or loss of sight temporarily. It depends on how many capillaries burst and the exploding pressure behind the ruptures.
