Semi drivers have been given a bad rap thanks to television shows televising truck stops supposedly filled with dozens of sex-crazed drivers looking for prostitutes. I'm married to a semi driver, and I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly while out on the road, but truck stops across America aren't filled with prostitutes, and not all semi drivers are fat dirty slobs that solicit their services. Semi drivers have been generalized by people who've probably never even visited a truck stop, and commercial drivers been lumped into one negative category.

One Bad Apple Spoils the Whole Bunch

I turned on Oprah one afternoon to find a show about semi drivers soliciting prostitutes. Yes, it does happen, but no, not all commercial drivers are dirty, low-down, sex-crazed men who are looking for a cheap thrill. The small percentage of semi drivers who participate in these types of activities give the others a bad name. Not all semi drivers solicit prostitutes, more commonly referred to as commercial company in truck driver lingo, and not all are willing to risk catching a disease, or end up divorced as a result. Most are good hardworking people with morals who are just trying to make a living, and it's just a small percentage of disgusting slobs who are willing to risk it all.

The Bad Ones Won't Get Away With it For Long

The small percentage of semi drivers who think they can get away with this type of behavior because they're hundreds of miles from home eventually do get caught. It is possible to be recognized by a friend, relative, or acquaintance - even hundreds of miles away. My husband recently ran into a guy he knows in a truck stop in Pennsylvania, and we live in Indiana. Gossip travels fast, but more than likely a sexually transmitted disease or a raging case of crabs will catch a low-life truck driver before anything or anyone else.

Very good article, and worthy of the public's attention. I agree, most truck driver's break the stereo-type rather than make it.

Thanks Deborah. Most are good guys, and not the road hogs and slobs they've been made out to be. Truck drivers are blamed for a lot of problems on the road, but no one ever mentions the dumb moves four-wheelers make. That's a completely different article, and I'm working on that one right now. Thanks for your comment.

I used to write insurance for truckers and they were some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!
