Among the seven-member United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai is the only political territory where the chief revenue source is not derived from the oil trade like other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) nations. Instead, Dubai is mainly focused on global business tourism attracting millions of foreign visitors every year. As such, Dubai is popularly known as the "Shopping Capital of the Middle East".

Located at the nexus of Europe, Asia and Africa, the Emirate of Dubai is fast becoming the host country of choice for business conferences and global events. It is also one of the most advanced finance and technology hubs in the region. Not surprisingly, most of the people in Dubai are expatriates, mostly Indian and British nationals. The minority Dubai nationals or "Emiratis" comprise only an estimated 13 percent of the entire population. More than half of the workforce are imported from other countries in South East Asia.

Considered one of the busiest airports in the world, the Dubai International Airport accommodates 80 airlines operating to and from 130 destinations worldwide. The Emirates Airline, which is the official international airline of the UAE, is based in Dubai and is well known for its first class service. Entry into Dubai may require a visit visa or a sponsorship from a Dubai resident or licensed UAE hotel.

Shopping is certainly a must in this duty-free paradise. The annual Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) attracts millions of visitors each year. Souk districts or market centers can be expected to be overflowing with bargain hunters. In addition, one can go on a shopping binge at the Mall of the Emirates, touted as one of the largest malls in the world. The Dubai Shopping Festival is held every January and lasts the entire month.
