There are supposed lake monsters in many countries around the world. These creatures are one of the cornerstones of Cryptozoology, the study of unknown or hidden animals. The most popular lake monster may be Nessie, but there are quite a few more. This article will give an overview of the most popular lake monsters from around the world.Cryptozoology Lake Monster - Nessie
Nessie, or the Loch Ness Monster, is the most famous of all cryptozoological lake monsters. It supposedly resides in the Loch Ness in Scotland, one of the largest lakes in Britain. Nessie is described as looking like a plesiosaur, a long-necked, finned prehistoric creature.
There have been sightings of Nessie in the water and on land since the 1930s. There have been numerous expeditions using sonar and underwater photography to try to get evidence of Nessie. Some photographs, and plenty of eye witness testimony, exist.
Cryptozoology Lake Monster - Champ
Champ is the cryptid who resides in Lake Champlain in Vermont. Not seen nearly as much as Nessie, Champ has been described as everything from a strange whale to a long snake-like creature. Several supposed photographs exist, the most notable belonging to Sandra Mansi in 1977. Just in case, Champ is now on the endangered species list in Vermont.
Cryptozoology Lake Monster - Illies
West of Anchorage, Alaska, there is a large lake called Illiamna. Stories began among the Inuit natives and have been backed up by visitors and sportsmen. Most sightings of these twelve to twenty foot long creatures come from airplanes flying over the lake. The Illies are described as fish-like in appearance and often visit the lake's shallows in small schools. While many believe that Lake Illiamna holds secret lake monsters, others think they are just large sturgeon.
