"I love you."

That's a phrase that can be said in different contexts. Whether said over a romantic dinner for two or in a scream of passion, being told that you are loved is calming to the soul.

However, what if the love is no longer there? Any way you put it, breaking up is hard to do. Literally. There is the potential for a lot of extreme emotions to appear. Anger, rage, happiness, hate and laughter (is this one just me?) are only the tip of the iceberg. The pressures of the situation can even open up a world of new vocabulary - or at least words not listed in the dictionary.

The pain of separating can last for weeks, months or even years. In fact, studies have shown that breakups can cause serious health problems ranging from "migraines, skin problems, depression and insomnia to high blood pressure and heart disease." (Gizowska) If you're like me, then heart to heart talks in person are just not for you. Does that make us bad people? No way! It makes us the conflict -aversive type. Or maybe we're just text message addicts.

It is understandable that ending a relationship that was meaningful can be even more difficult when there is crying/yelling/rationalizing involved with one or both of the parties. So how can you avoid this? Two words: Text Message.

There are various "emoticons" that can be used to convey different emotions. Choosing the ones that fit your feelings best will better convey the text message breakup.

*Text messaging language used. Necessary translations are provided in parentheses.

<3 is a heart

:'( is someone crying

>:0 is meant to resemble an angry face with horns

: X is a face with mouth covered (as in, "oops, I can't believe I said that")

The angry/sarcastic breakup:

I H8 U! We R ova >:0 (I hate you. We are over)

U & I R thru. >:0

U + Me = <3. Not.

You complete me. Make that, used to complete me.

The Poetic:

Roses are red, violets are blue. It was fun while it lasted. Boo hoo, boo hoo, boo hoo. :'(

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Zero.

The Apathetic:

I had our babies names picked out. Oh well. : I

It was fun while it lasted. TTYL. (Talk to you later)

I guess I was going through a phase. Oops. : X

I'm so sad

Immature, self-centered and self-serving. A person who can do something like this to somebody they claim to have cared about is a best a sick jerk.

I have conducted entire relationships via text message. :) I find that silence and failure to respond to them also makes a good way out. Thanks for the giggle!

Matty, I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I can't read because I'm illiterate due to my continued use of internet-speak. Could you put your ridiculous rant into some abbreviated text message format? Thx.

Nice tip on adding the j/k. I might try that on my husband as a joke later.

LOL. I would never do this, but different strokes for different folks. :-) --- Matty, if you're so into literacy, why do you have typos and improper punctuation. LOL
