It's true. Acres are for sale in Outer Space. For as little as $19.95 you can buy an acre of land in outer space for you or your loved ones. Such a lovely, unique gift idea! As a matter of fact, as I sit here writing this I can think of it now, a Hallmark card that says "Lets have launch on the moon" with a certificate of ownership inside the card stating that the beholder now has his or her own spot on the moon.

The genius behind all this is a young man named Dennis Hope who founded the very first "Extraterrestrial Estate Agency called, The Lunar Embassy". Although there is a standing 1967 Outer Space Treaty that prohibits such land buying in outer space, Hope saw that this treaty did not apply to individuals. A declaration of ownership was filed with the United Nations as well as the US and Russian governments 27 years ago by Hope to ensure that a legal basis for the ownership of the properties sold here can be claimed. On that day in 1980, the Lunar Embassy was born.

How can this be? How can one purchase extraterrestrial property and is it really authentic and legal?

When you buy land in outer space you are given a printed deed. On this deed Lunar Embassy uses the word "novel" to describe your deed and its products. The use of the word 'novel or novelty was suggested by lawyers 24 years ago to "help avoid any frivolous lawsuits from a foreign country." While outer space property buying folks may really and truly believe they are investing in future land for their children's children one must truly doubt the authenticity of the deed, though legal... would really stand up in a court of law in many moon years to come when perhaps us humans really do take up residence on Mars. According to LunarEmbassy.com the last count of land owners was "over 3,470,072 people who are already proud owners of their extraterrestrial property, with properties on the Moon being the hot forerunner of course (because these are the only properties you can easily see from Earth), coming in at approximately 2'524'728 customers, and Mars owners currently running at 945'344 customers. (Yes, these numbers are recent.)"

I wonder how legitimate this really is.

Very interesting topic, I hadn't heard of ET land ownership. It might be fun to have the deed mounted on the wall, but I wouldn't count on it being legit. Sounds like there are more landowners than places on the moon. I'm thinking a place on Pluto might be nice.
