In the time that I lived in France, I learned quite a bit about fashion and art, but the most about food! Parisians love to eat and take great care in selecting ingredients for a delectable and satisfying meal. The family I lived with served me all sorts of dishes, from pâté to mâche, but there was always a bottle of red on the table and never an empty glass. If you've heard of the so-called "French Paradox" (that their diets can be so rich, and yet they stay so thin) then you know wine plays an important part in their culture and diet. Plus, it's delicious! But with all the strange terminology, varietals, and Chateau de Unpronounceable-Name on the bottle, how can you possibly know what's good and what's sour grapes? Luckily, my father also produces wine, so I've definitely learned about the process. If you love wine but just need to learn more, read on! Don't Let the Waiter Boss You Around
When you open the wine list at a restaurant, chances are you're picking a bottle based on a fancy-schmancy name you don't understand or by price. Price should definitely be a factor, but it's time to know what you're getting into and not let a smug server get the upper hand. The most important fact when selecting a French wine is to realize that they are named by region, not by the kind of grape. So, for example, if you like Merlot from Australia, a wine from Bordeaux might suit your palate. If German Rieslings wet your whistle, grab a bottle with Alsace on the label. That's the simple trick - really. No "oh la la" magic to it. Grab your glass and get ready or order like a pro.
