Are you a red wine fan? Is no meal complete without a hearty glass of red? You are not alone. Many people, including myself, enjoy the robust, well-rounded flavor of red wine. But, during the hot summer months, all everyone seems to be talking about are white wines. Sparklers and light, fruity wines abound at picnics and cookouts, but are far too sweet for many red wine drinkers.

What people don't know is there are many red wines that can be chilled or have a lighter, more summery flavor. Red wines, in general, are best served at room temperature because of the high tannin content. Refrigerating a red wine seems to accentuate this character even more so, bringing the wine out if balance. Heavy Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons almost never are refrigerated. But, some reds have much less tannin and higher acidity. These wines pair well with lighter food, such as grilled fare and vegetables, and finish on the palate lighter. They also can be chilled. Good reds to try are Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Gamay, or Tampranillo. For chilling, just submerge in a bucket of ice water or place in your refrigerator for fifteen minutes prior to serving.

Another thing to look for when choosing a summer red is the alcohol content. Try to find a wine with a lower alcohol content, not more than 12-13.5%, if possible. The lower alcohol content makes the drink more smooth and moderate. Also, a high alcohol content makes the drink hotter on the palate and body, and tends to turn up the heat on peppery or spicy foods.

Finally, a good option for people who swear by red wine is to try Rose. I know what you're thinking. Rose is too sweet! Not so. These days, there are many brilliant Rose's out on the market, many with a refreshingly dry finish and light texture. Rose is one of my favorite wines for summer. Now there are wineries which specialize in Roses in Argentina, Spain, California, Italy, France and New Zealand. One I personally recommend is Menage A Trois Rose. This excellent table wine is affordable, at around $13.00 a bottle, and has a juicy, fruity aroma. The finish is dry and pleasing.
