Star Jones Admits to Gastric Bypass Surgery

As a plus-size woman, one of the hardest things to deal with is the criticism of others. It comes from your friends, family and even strangers. Yes - strangers.

People who don't even know you feel they can talk to you about your weight. They want to give you information on the latest diet craze. They want you to join their gym. They want to ultimately help you get down to the size they feel you should be at - without even asking your permission. They just assume you want their help and any input is okay. I think this is why Star Jones was so massacred for not telling us about her gastric bypass surgery.

If you haven't heard yet, she's come out recently and told the world that 'yes' it was the bypass surgery that helped her lose all of her weight. Now, the media is weighing in - giving her Kudos for coming out with the truth. It's asserted that if she'd come clean sooner that all of her troubles with her fans would have gone away. She might even still be a host on The View. This may be true and that's what's so sad.

I wonder if Star Jones would have been so crucified by her obvious omission if it had been over a nose job. After all, don't many starlets do this and lie about it? What if she'd had a 'boob' job? Would it have been so outrageous for her to withhold this type of information? I feel the fact that society made such a big deal about her not being forthcoming about the bypass surgery is just another prejudice weighed against obese people.

Although considered to be a disease, obesity is still seen in American as a condition worse than being an alcoholic or drug addict. Some how, societal courtesies and manners go out the door when it comes to fat. What can happen to turn this around is unclear. However, for now, people like Star Jones have to ante up. So to all of the plus-size stars and actors, if you lose weight, please tell - or else.
