The Students:

While many universities claim "party school" status - New Mexico Tech can claim "nerd school" status. While the students are still diverse in interests, with rugby, dodgeball, professional organizations, parties and celebrations, pretty much all Techies are nerds at heart. It's not uncommon for classroom discussion to turn into a heated debate over Linux and Windows, or for students to stop in the parking lot to discuss the latest computer they built. The student body is basically broken up by major for classification purposes - since it is such a small school, the former classifications of jocks, cheerleaders, and nerds from high school become the "science people", "engineers", and "computer science people", there is also the "psychology" majors and those "TC (Technical Communication)" people but they are fewer in number. Overall, people are pretty friendly and welcoming and everyone bands together to make the best out of the small town, small school life - and it works pretty well. This holds true in all but one case - the male to female ratio is rather pitiful, although every year it does seems to get better.
