It is that time of year again when school buses will be on the road taking our children to their particular place of learning. For those that are old hands at this, it is sometimes a welcome relief. By this time the kids are bored and looking for something to do. Getting back to classes and buckling down to studies will certainly take care of this. It also frees up some time for mothers and fathers who have been at their wit's end trying to come up with activities to keep their children from too much boredom.

For many whose children are starting kindergarten it is a different story. The separation anxieties can set in now and have parents wondering if their child is doing OK. This can be a traumatic time for the child also as it may be the first time being separated from their parents. One of the best things to do to set your mind at ease is to visit the school before time for it to start and meet your child's teacher. Many schools offer this opportunity a few days beforehand to allow parents to come in, meet the teacher, and let them know of any problems your child may have. Taking your child and letting them get an idea of what this is going to be all about is the best way of quieting fears of the unknown. Children have vivid imaginations and their minds can conjure up totally different ideas of what is actually the case.

Talking to your child and explaining how much fun it is going to be to learn all the different things they will be learning is one way of letting them know what to expect, however taking them to the school and letting them see first hand is the best. That is why they say one picture is worth a thousand words. To a child this is particularly true. They may not exactly get the gist of what you are saying but seeing it for themselves will give them a better idea. Don't let them see that this is an upsetting time for you. This may make them not want to go to school. If they think it is upsetting you, it couldn't be good. For the first few years of your child's life you are their world and they are anxious to please the most important person in their life.
