Even as tongues keep wagging in Washington that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's supporters will soon fade away -- a comparison of his campaign to Dean's campaign -- his supporters and followers are proving that they are here not for a fan fare, but to effect a positive change that the country needs. In demonstrating their zealous support for the man who inspired them, a group of supporters called Obama Dallas has launched a nationwide food drive in commemoration of Sen. Obama's 46th birthday, which is August 4. The goal of the group is to raise $100,000 before August 15, 2007.
In a flyer tagged "Blow Out Hunger," distributed squarely by the group, they reechoed the senator's call for communities across the landscape of America to work together in fostering a more perfect union. Part of the flyer reads, "Join us as we Blow Out Hunger in celebration of Senator Barack Obama's 46th birthday. We plan to nourish our communities by raising $100,000 to feed hungry children and families all across America," the group wrote.
In Dallas Texas, the following locations are where supporters will be tabling on Saturday, August 4, collecting cash donations, can and package food items. They are; Paul Quinn College, Metro Grill, Central Dallas Ministries and St. Luke Community United Methodist Church. Contributors who intend to make their donation through credit cards are directed to go to www.help.secondharvest.org/obama to do so.
On Monday night (7-30-07), Sen. Obama who was at a campaign event at Gilley's in Dallas, saw the big "Blow Out Hunger" poster and he said, "This is exactly the kind of thing I'd love to see all over America...people getting involved in their communities, working together, changing things...it's what this campaign is about. It's one of the finest examples I've seen and we need a round of applause for those who made this happen," said Sen. Obama.
