Winstead's is a legendary restaurant in Kansas City. The first Winstead's opened in the 1940's and has been a popular restaurant ever since. It all began at the first Winstead's which was built on Kansas City's, "Country Club Plaza" as business improved more restaurants were built. Winstead's is generally considered to be one of the best places to get a burger in Kansas City.

Its been many years since that first Winstead's opened and now there are a total of 10 Winstead's restaurants around the Kansas City Metropolitan area. For information about locations and phone numbers you can visit the Winstead's homepage to find out more. Winstead's first opened as a drive-in, but through the years it has evolved into a standard eat in restaurant. Winstead's has kept the appearance of a classic drive-in restaurant on both the inside and outside of the restaurant but drive-in service is no longer available. Winstead's was a popular hangout for teens in the 40's and 50's especially, but as time progressed it became a popular restaurant for any age.

In 1998 the Wall Street Journal announced that Winstead's was "The Midwest Burger King" Winstead's had not been very well known outside of Kansas City up until this point. The Wall Street Journal was also careful to correctly point out that a Winstead's steakburger is not complete without "the exclusive Winstead's drink you eat with a spoon." That drink is the "special chocolate malt" which was originally known simply as "the frosty." Winstead's claims to have taken the name before Wendy's but it has never really been investigated.
