Osteoarthritis of the Thumb: Treatments and Surgery

Part 1

About 2 1/2 years ago I started have pain in the fatty section of my palm of my right hand. It would come and go. At that time taking Ibuprofen and resting my hand worked. Then for awhile I had no problems with my thumb at all. It would come and go. The pain
I could tolerate and I was able to still use my hand. Slowly the pain increased and using my thumb to pull up my slacks, cut my food, put my hair up, became difficult but, I managed as the pain was not severe. Finally I went into see my doctor and she referred me to a Orthopedic doctor. I went in for my appointment and Dr. G. had me make a fist, try to squeeze his hand, have me try to pick things up with my thumb and index finger which was very painful and hard to accomplish. He decided to try to treat the joint with an injection of Cortisone directly into the joint of my thumb that attaches to my hand. This was rather painful but I could feel the joint expanding. He said that if I had anymore pain with in the next 2 weeks to come back and he would use and x-ray machine to view my thumb while injecting another round of cortisone.

Hi Rita, No the therapy didn't work, but, my thumb was already 1/2 way out of joint, so how could it. But, I am pleased to say the surgery did work. I had arthroplasty of the basal joint. They took the basal joint out. Left a small amount of bone behind for the hematoma to attach to, and that turned into scar tissue which gave me a new joint. NO pain, except for physical and occupational therapy to get the rest of the hand and arm going. But the thumb works great. Just have to gain strength in it now. You are welcome to message me, and chat about it. Hugs Mary Second opinions are great.

I work for the Post Office and both of my thumbs have gone bad. I had a melt down when the doctor told me what I needed done, removal of left joint and implant in the right. I am wearing 2 splints but they just hurt so bad I can hardly stand it. I am sorry to hear that the therapy was not the answer. I am going for another opinion, but I fear the worst.

I could have sworn I commented on this article...well, by now it's over and I hope verything went well...did he have to do the secondary procedure? That happened to me when I went in for my rotator cuff surgery it was supposed to be arthroscopic but when he went in he saw a lot more damage than he thought so he had to cut... I'm in therapy now and it is helping but very painful to do...are you in therapy yet? My best wishes to you for a speedy healing Barbara

I have RA (or Lupus, depending on which MD you ask) rather than Osteo, but I feel ya, man. Pain is pain. Good luck to you on the surgery.
