What to do When Others Say Your Career Plans Are Crazy

It's commonly held wisdom that job hunters should "follow their dreams" or "pursue their passion" when looking for work. Sounds great when you read it in a book, or hear it from a counselor tucked away in some school. But it gets a lot harder when you put that notion into practice -- unless your dream is to be an accountant, lawyer, doctor or some other almost universally accepted dream.

But if you're one of those who yearn for something more unique, less obvious in your career, you have to be prepared for a barrage of criticism. Stray from the straight-and-narrow path with your career plans and suddenly everyone is an expert. So get strong and stick with your plan by applying these techniques for strengthening your resolve and forging ahead.

Look closely at where other's criticism is coming from
Before you let someone's stinging assessment of your career plans break your spirit and possibly shut down your motivation, ask what the underlying perspective on their advice comes from. For instance, if someone tells you that your desire to work at an art gallery is flakey, think about why he or she would say that. Maybe this person studied art, didn't have any success in the field and is bitter about it. Or perhaps he went through long stretches of unemployment, leading him to value stability over career satisfaction. Understanding the possible reasons for criticism can help you understand its origins and meanings.

Take criticisms as just one person's opinion
Get in the habit of looking at every piece of advice with the phrase "according to you," or "in your opinion" attached to the end of it. No one person has the absolute truth on any subject. Their opinions, ideas, and recommendations are all colored by their experiences, training, and brain chemistry. It's not an absolute judgment.

Analyze the facts of your plan
Take any negative comments about your career plans as a cue to review the specifics of your plan. Is your plan sound? Do you have all the key elements in place? Have you considered everything? If you look at your career plans and they're sound, then don't put undue emphasis on criticism.
