George Washington: Life and Death of the First President of the United States

Born on February 22, 1732, died December 14, 1799, George Washington became the first President of the United States of America, adding one more great title to a lifetime of great deeds.

He led the Confederate Army against Britain, from the beginning in 1775 to victory in 1783.

Before that, George Washington was one of the first American Colonists to serve in the French and Indian War. He aided the British in victoring over the French and their allies, certain American Indian tribes in what become known as the "Seven Years' War".

As for his personal life, Washington would marry a Virginian widow by the name of Martha Dandridge Custis, and moved to Mount Vernon. George started a plantation like a tuckahoe, and a political career. During their healthy marriage, the couple would raise both of her children, John Parke Custis and Martha Parke Custis. John would have two of his own - Eleanor Parke and George Washington Parke - before dying in 1781. George and Martha took on the responsibility of raising little Eleanor and George.

When time came to fight the British on April 1775, Washington showed up at the Second Continental Congress, all dressed for war. Washington took command of many campaigns during the American Revolution, including such battles as the Battle of Long Island, Battle of Harlem Heights, and the Battle of Brandywine - where his army was actually defeated.

George Washington was President of new United States from 1789 to 1797, elected to office twice. He is the first and only President to receive 100% of the electorial votes. Given his record and those statistics, just why his face is on a 1 dollar bill and nothing more is beyond me. Then he retired to Mount Vernon, where he lived out the rest of his days as a farmer until he died of a bout of pneumonia and laryngitis on December 14, 1799.
